These curls were made by French Braiding her hair while wet, (2 braids total, 1 braid on each side of her head) keeping the braids in overnight, then taking them out when dry.
I have been using this "technique" on my 7 year old since she was 3 years old. I have found, just plain piggy braids vs french braids, makes the hair less frizzy and "BIG" The crimped/curled hair stays longer with just a regular braid.
I make sure to braid it, just out of the shower, so it is nice and wet. Also, the you can braid in multiples if you want it to be BIGGER but not FRIZZIER!! BUT, make sure you keep the hair parted in the middle... we do 2 piggy braids, 4,(2 to a side) and even 6 (3 to a side) The 6 braids made her hair look freakishly big and it took 3 days for the crimp to fall.
For my daughter's hair (it's rather thin) we wash, rinse, condition, rinse and then add a dab if frizz free balm through the length before braiding.
In the morning, I remove plastic bands and CAREFULLY UN-BRAID her piggies. I have learned through much experience, the less you touch it the better it looks. Short of changing her middle part to a side part and sometimes tying a small amount of top hair on the side with a ribbon, I only touch it enough to make sure her scalp isn't showing (from the original part). and that's it!!
We spray a small mist of DOVE TOUCHABLE AEROSOL Hairspray on the whole 18 inches... and she's out the door!!
This has been my saving grace on many occasions... it takes less than 5 minutes, so on School days, we do it often!!
