Elastic Heart

Another repeat. We originally posted this one in 2009. I hope you guys aren't getting tired of seeing our old stuff lately. I just love all these heart hairstyles and don't want them to go to waste with Valentines Day right around the corner!

No braiding skills required on this Hairdo.

Start with the parts. Make one in the middle on the top. One from ear to ear. And, 2 diagonal parts going from the middle to the front of her head on both sides.

This picture is to show you where to start. As you can see, one side is finished and I'm just starting on the other side. I think it's pretty self explanatory from here. All finished! At this point, we just waited for it to dry and added some flat iron curls.

  1. Do you have any suggestions for Valentine's Hair Dos for shorter styles? We just cut my little girl's hair into a bob and I wanted to do something fun and cute for Vday!

  2. What do you do to avoid breakage from all of those elastics. I carefully cut mine out. I try to avoid doing all of my daughters hair daily because I'm afraid of all the damage I'm doing!!

  3. I'm with Holly, how do you avoid the damage? I love doing my daughter's hair but I don't want to wreck it in the process.

  4. Our family of four, we have a new one ready to post that I think might work for short hair. I'll post it as soon as I get a chance (most likely this weekend.)

Holly and Misus Banni, I worry about breakage and damage too! I try not to do styles with a lot of elastics too often or at least give her hair a break in-between. Also, I use "goody ouchless" elastics that have a really smooth finish and try not to get them too tight. I think not getting them extremely tight is the most important thing. They are much easier to take out that way as well.

  5. Our family of four, most of her hairstyles can easily be adapted for shorter hair. My little girl is almost 2 & I have been doing her hair since she was 6 months old, lol. I just adapted them to the top of her head most of the time.

On the breakage: I found out if I use a seam ripper to cut the elastic & then unwind it instead of pulling it out then it doesn't do much damage at all. I still use the baby elastic's that I get in the baby section. Her hair hasn't thickened up into little girl hair yet. She's getting length just not fullness.

Good luck. Everybody thinks I'm so cool when they see the cute stuff that I do with her hair. Makes me feel WONDERFUL & I thank you for that. :)

  6. I cut the elastic outta her hair too. I never thought to use a seam ripper how smart! I didn't know about the ouchless bands I just buy the colors I need... Thank you ladies so much!

I love this heart design! I tried the braid one but Caities hair is too thin, this one should be better for her hair type :)

  7. I truly have to say that this is my favorite heart design you've done. I love it. Question - how do you pull out the elastics without pulling out your dd's hair? We've used them but it pulls her hair out when I take them out.

  8. Every time I come here, I am simply in awe. My girls would LOVE to have their hair look like that, but unfortunately, their mother is hair challenged.

  21. well, you answered my question... lol.. cause MY princess saw this and immediately demanded I do it to her hair... which means I officially have to go to the store and buy something I didn't think I needed before... a rat tail comb... I also need more elastics and wanted to know what kind you use... I will be buying the goody ouchless ones... none others... Now if the stupid snow and ice (we're in Virginia Beach, it's not supposed to look like Illinois winter) would clear enough, I'd go to the store... maybe I'll get there tomorrow.

  22. My sister-in-law just sent me the site. I love it! Thanks for all the new ideas. I never would have thought of SEWING my daughter's hair. I put in a heart braid this morning and she was so tickled she said she wanted it again tomorrow for church and again on Monday for school.
One question--how do you do a messy bun? I can't quite get it.

  23. sadly, between my daughter's shorter (about 2" below the shoulder) and her bangs, we were unable to pull this one off... though I think some of it may have been a wiggly 5-yr old excited about going to school tomorrow.

Fortunately, she was okay with it and let me put the heart braid in.... that one's great for hair that doesn't have the length.

And my daughter is asking me now everyday when her hair will get as long as a princess'... not just your princess, but all the disney and story ones that she's getting obessessed with... so I have no doubt this blog will continue to be essential to us.
