A French Braid & Fishtail Braid Combo
Today's hairstyle tutorial is inspired by a photo of a fishtail braid / feathered French braid style we first saw on a fabulous Instagram account: flettemamma
We "regrammed" the original photo of this style last week on our Hair4MyPrincess Instagram and also shared it on our facebook page. After receiving an overwhelming number of requests for a video tutorial, we decided to try and recreate this fun style for you. So, a huge thanks to @flettemamma for inspiring this "diving mermaid braid!" The Princess and I both love this braided hairstyle and she plans to wear it often.
A funny tidbit, we decided to name this braid the "Diving Mermaid" because the Princess's little brother told us the fishtail braid in the center looked just like an upside down mermaid fin which was diving into the water. ;)
I love how the fishtail braid is incased between the 2 French braids! So unique and eye catching. Depending on the look you are going for, you can make these braids a little more messy, or more smooth and sleek. I personally find fishtail braids to be beautiful no matter how they are finished (messy or perfect.)
Of course, depending on the length of hair you are working with, there are several different ways you could complete this style. You could end the braids at the base of the neck in a low ponytail or bun. Or, you could finish with one big fishtail braid at the bottom (instead of the braids wrapping around the fishtail in the center.) I could also see this being a cute half up hairstyle with a few modifications.
This would be a pretty hairstyle for teens, girls, and women with medium length to long hair.
Supplies Needed:
- 3 temporary ponytail holders (to hold the ends of the braids while you are working.)
- 1 medium size clear elastic
- Gel, pomade, or water (to help control flyaways)
