Braid With A Twist, Quick and Easy Beginner Hairstyle

Braid with a twist, simple hair tutorial

"The Princess" is growing up. Yes, it is sad.. but true! She has been doing her own hair most mornings lately and we wanted to share a few of the styles she has been wearing and doing herself.  Over the next little while, we will be adding several of her quick and easy "DIY beginner hairstyles" into the mix on our blog.  These styles will be great for school mornings, or when you are in a hurry, and for those of you who are starting to do your own hair as well!

Braid with a twist, beginner hairstyle

We shared a similar hairstyle a couple of years ago (which you may remember) called the "braid in a braid." The Princess wears that original braid quite often as well. I think it was actually one of the very first hairstyles she did on her own! One day for school she decided to add a rope braid in place of the regular braid and I think it came out really cute!  This style would be darling using a fishtail braid as well, but keep in mind, fishtails do take a little bit longer to create.

Although this hairstyle is very simple and quick, it still looks quite interesting and different.  So much more fun than a regular side braid.  ;)

Supplies needed to recreate this braid:
  • 1 temporary hair tie or clip for the rope braid
  • 1 medium size elastic or hair tie for the main braid
  • hairspray, gel, pomade, etc. to help control flyaways (optional)

Flip Knot Waterfall Feather Braid

This fun waterfall/feather braid is a variation of the "flip knot braid" we posted last week.  Of course, waterfall braids have always been a favorite braiding technique of ours.... a favorite most likely shared with many.  I mean really, who doesn't love the intricate, yet relaxed bohemian look of a waterfall braid?  So gorgeous! This knotted variation is great if you are looking for something unique and a little bit different from the standard braided waterfall (which has become so popular.)

Unique waterfall braid, the "flip knot"

This braid can be worn on the side (as shown in our tutorial below.) Or, you could bring the braid all the way around her head horizontally or diagonally.  You could make a braid on each side and join them in the center.  Or, you could use this braid as an accent to a ponytail, updo, bun etc.  This could really be the base for an endless amount of hairstyles if you want to get creative. ;)

You could wear this hairstyle for school, work, every day, the beach, etc.  Or for more formal or special occasions.  With the right dress, I could see this working for Prom, Homecoming, Weddings, Brides, Flower Girls, Communions, or photos.

Flip Knot Braid Hairstyle

We have done several knotted hairstyles here on our "hair blog" in the past, and love them. I think knots are fun to try if you are wanting something different and unique. We tend to wear standard braids at our house most often, and knots are a great way to mix things up every now and then. This particular knot braid is somewhat similar to our "spiral knot french braid" which we posted way back in 2011 and is still one of our favorites!

This braid/knot could be used to create many different hairstyles. We have chosen to place this braid in the front/side of her head (using the bangs area) with her hair mostly down as a simple style for our tutorial today. You could add another braid on the other side of her head if you wanted, or use this braid as an accent for a cute updo, ponytail, or bun.  Be sure to check back next week... We have filmed another fun variation of this braid that we really love.  <3

Our video tutorial (below) was shot using our hair mannequin "Plastic Patty."  But, we wanted to include a few pictures of this braid on human hair for you as well.  The Princess has worn this style a few times and loves how quick, cute, and simple it is.  This would be a great style for school, work, church, or other occasion.

I wanted to mention that whenever we post a hairstyle using knots, we always get questions about taking it out... and if it is difficult or if it damages or tangles her hair. In our experience, knotted braids come out quite easily (just like any other braid.) I assume you wouldn't want to purposefully tie the knots too tight, or use super thin strands to make your knots, as this might create a knot that would be harder to get out. We have never had any trouble with any of the knotted styles the princess has worn though.... and she has worn a lot!  ;)

Half Up Hairstyle, Braided Rosette and Feathered Headband

Pretty half up rosette braid and headband video tutorial

We were in the mood for an elegant and pretty hairstyle this week.  This style was created by taking several elements (a dutch feather braid headband, a regular 3 strand braid, a braided rosette) and combining them to form a fancy half up hairstyle. This classic style would be great for many special or formal occasions such as church, dances, recitals, communions, baptisms, flower girls, weddings, renaissance faires, etc.  I think the dainty side rosette and the braid swooping across the back of her head gives this style a romantic, feminine, and vintage look.

The Princess usually prefers hairstyles which are fairly sleek, tight, and neat. She says that loose braids bug her sometimes as she feels like they are falling out.  ;)  But, if your personal style is more of a tousled look, you can definitely stretch out and loosen the braid in the feathered headband as well as the braided flower for more of an effortless or messy look. If you prefer a waterfall braid over a feather braid, you can do that instead (for the headband.) But, we have found that the feather braid tends to hold up better. Some waves or curls could also be added for a cute finishing touch if you desire.
